Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai

IMU Chennai will be announcing the date of IMU-CET i.e., national-level Indian Maritime University Common Entrance in May/June. The admission to the UG (except BBA), PG and research programs to the IMU Chennai and its affiliated institutions is done based on the marks scored in IMU-CET. Along with entrance, students are also required to take the physical fitness test later as per DSG guidelines based on which the final admission process would be done.

The registration for the exam is done online and candidates are advised to check the eligibility criteria before filling out the application form. The counselling after the declaration of results would be done online for admission to its 6 campuses. The candidates taking admission to UG courses are required to have a valid passport for the admission process. For students taking admission to BBA, the selection process is based on merit in the previous qualifying exam.

The entrance exam, IMU-CET, differs for UG, PG and MBA courses. The exam pattern for different courses offered by IMU Chennai are as follows:

  • IMU-CET for all UG courses consists of 200 multiple choice questions and the syllabus consists of English, General Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (Plus 2 level).
  • For MBA, IMU-CET is different and consists of 120 questions and the syllabus is Quantitative ability, Data interpretation, Verbal ability and Logical reasoning.
  • For M.Tech IMU-CET, there are 120 multiple choice questions and the syllabus is Logical reasoning, Mathematics and one Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering/Civil Engineering.

IMU Chennai UG Course Eligibility 2022

  • B.Tech/B.Sc.: The candidate should have passed 10+2 or its equivalent qualification with the PCM stream. The minimum average marks required in PCM are 60% marks and a minimum of 50% marks in English subjects. The Candidates native to Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and who and whose both parents belong to Scheduled Tribes are given a relaxation of 5% in English subject marks will be applicable.
  • BBA: The candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in any stream and a minimum of 50% marks in English subject in 10th and/or 12th Examination.
  • Diploma: The candidate should have passed 10+2 in PCM or its equivalent from a recognized board of education with a minimum average of 60% marks in PCM and 50% marks in English to be eligible.

OR

The candidate should have passed B.Sc. (PCM) or B.Sc. Electronics with Physics as a core subject with a minimum of 55% marks in the final year.

OR

The candidate should have passed B.E./B. Tech from IIT or a college recognized by AICTE with a minimum of 50% marks in the final year.

*Note: The candidates belonging to SC/ST category get a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks; however, it does not apply to English marks.

IMU Chennai PG Course Eligibility 2022

  • MBA/M.Sc.: The candidates need to have a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized University with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and a minimum of 50% marks in English subject in 10th/ 12th/ Degree examination.
  • M.Tech: The engineering graduates in Mechanical/ Civil/ Marine /Naval Architecture or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks are eligible to apply for the course.
  • M.Tech (Marine Engineering and Management): The candidate needs to have passed BE/B.Tech in Marine Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Naval Architecture with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University or institute to be eligible. Candidates with valid GATE/GRE Scores are exempted from appearing in IMU-CET, however, they will be considered for admissions only against the residuary seats.

*Note: The SC/ST category reserved candidates will be given a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks; however, it will not apply to minimum eligibility in English marks.

  • The selection criteria for all PG Courses offered by IMU Chennai is based on merit in the entrance exam IMU-CET.

IMU Chennai Application Process

  • Candidates interested in taking admission to various UG (except BBA) and PG courses of IMU Chennai and its affiliated institutes need to register for the IMU-CET entrance exam online by visiting the official website portal at https://www.imu.edu.in//.
  • Students are then required to fill the registration form providing correct details (email id and phone number) along with other demographic details.
  • After completing the registration process, automated emails /SMS will be sent to every registered applicant on successful registration of application which would be used further for the login process.
  • Students then need to fill the application form and submit the necessary scanned documents.
  • Then they are required to select 3 exam centres based on their preferences out of which IMU Chennai would select one as the main exam centre.
  • After filling out everything, the last step is the application fee. The payment of the application fee needs to be submitted online through net banking/ credit card/ debit card. Make sure to download the payment receipt and print the filled-in application form for future reference.

Ques. What is the age limit for UG programs at IMU Chennai?

Ans. The age limit for admission at IMU Chennai is a minimum age of 17 years and maximum age of 25 years. For SC/ST, relaxation is of 5 years, NC-OBC relaxation is of 3 years and relaxation for female candidates is of 2 years.

Ques. What are the medical criteria to take admission in UG programs at IMU Chennai?

Ans.   • Marine Division: This course consists of pre-sea and post-sea training programs for merchant navy personnel, working both on deck and engineering side. The short-duration programs range from entry-level courses to Ship Masters level courses.
  • Port division: For major ports, maritime boards, non-major ports and organizations connected with transport trade. These include short-term training courses, seminars and workshops, certificate courses and more.

Ans. At IMU Chennai, 15% of the total seats available for Indian Nationals are reserved for eligible candidates belonging to SC, 7.5% for ST, and 27% for OBC-NCL and 10% for General-EWS. For Persons with Disability (PwD) in MBA and M.Sc Programs, the reservation is 5% of total seats.
