A national research deemed university close to the Tamil Nadu city of Tiruchirappalli is the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (also known as NIT Trichy or NIT Tiruchirappalli). Established in 1964 as the Regional Engineering College Tiruchirappalli, it was affiliated with the University of Madras and supported by the governments of Tamil Nadu and India. With the blessing of the Government of India, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the University Grants Commission (UGC), the college was given presumed university status in 2003 and was renamed the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli. NIT Trichy is a member of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) system, a collection of centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs) overseen by the Council of NITSER. It is recognised by the Government of India as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007. The Government of India's Ministry of Education provides funding for the institute, which only concentrates on science, technology, engineering, management, and architecture.
